Tribute album update

Previously, we announced The Innocence Mission tribute album benefiting the Polaris Project would be released in the spring of 2009. This news was provided by one of the contributing bands, the Winterpills. They were to provide their version of "Keeping Awake", however the album was never released and it's appearing as though it may never be.

Despite the lack of news regarding the as-of-yet released album, Trespassers William has graciously posted a streaming version of their cover, "Tomorrow On The Runway". You can hear the track at their myspace page.

Steve Brown buys Ephrata Main Theatre

The former drummer of the Innocence Mission, Steve Brown, has busy since leaving the band...not just raising children, but with the ownership of Lily's on Main restaurant. And now he and his family have expanded with a new entertainment venture: music, theatre and live music at the recently purchased Ephrata Main Theatre.

"Shadows" and royalties?

Back in 1986, The Innocence Mission released their debut EP Tending the Rose Garden. The track "Shadows" found its way to Amy Grant and was subsequently recorded on her highly successful album Lead Me On.

After all these years, I'm sure many of us had forgotten all about this song, but in 2008 Amy Grant toured and once again performed the song. So do you think Karen and Don are still getting their performance royalties? One can only hope.

"Weathered" DVD available for purchase

It was bound to happen sooner or later folks. Unless I delete some of your favorite content on the backside of the site, a new hosting package will need to be purchased. Update: Weathered walked away with multiple awards this past weekend at the Damah Film Festival. Honors included: Best Actress: Nicole Parker & Audience Award Best Film. The film is no longer available online, however you can see it live at the Heartland Film Festival.

The Innocence Mission's new recorded version of "Our Harry" can be heard for a limited time online in the film, Weathered, by indie filmmaker Matt Barber. "Brotherhood of Man" also makes an appearance. Weathered is an official selection in the Damah Film Festival. Please visit their site damah.com or view the film in person on October 3rd in Seattle, WA at 1:30 and 4:30pm at the Damah Film Festival.

The film has also been accepted to the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis, IN between October 15-24.

"Birds of Our Neighborhood" gets digital re-release

"Birds of Our Neighborhood" was digitally released today through MP3 dealers like Amazon.com and Apple's iTunes. This leaves "Umbrella" as the last remaining discontinued album.

Debut album 20th year anniversary

Yes, it really has been 20 years since the 1989 self-titled debut album. Not only am I turning 40 this week, but now I'm feeling even more dated. In contrast, I've put together a compilation of tracks found on the debut album performed live over the A&M years (1990-1996) with one notable exception: there's no known live recording of "Mercy". In its place, I've included a performance of "Pride Takes A Fall" (non-album track). Whenever possible, I've tried to use their latter performances, as these were typically recorded to DAT, sound better, and are more simplified in their structure. This will hopefully lure the attention of the Innocence Mission's newer fans to that of their old music. I hope you enjoy the songs.

Debut album re-released

On May 19, 2009, A&M Records digitally re-released the Innocence Mission's self-titled debut album, which can be downloaded at commercial sites such as Amazon.com. The band's second full length album, Umbrella, remains out-of-print.

"Weathered" to show at two upcoming Film Festivals

Weathered will be playing at the Indianapolis International Film Festival‏ on Saturday, July 18th (1:30 pm) and again on Tuesday, July 21st (5:30 pm) at the IMA/DeBoest Lecture Hall.

Between August 7-9, Weathered will be screened at the Feel Good Festival in Hollywood, CA.

Until a DVD is made commercially available, seeing the film is the only way to hear the newly recorded version of "Our Harry" by The Innocence Mission. If you attend one of these events, please let us know your thoughts.

Two new audio covers

A Google search turned up two new covers this week. First off is Ryan Walsh's (Hallelujah The Hills) cover of "Bright As Yellow" downloadable here (see the bottom of the linked page).

Also available on CD, and a streamable version, is Ronald of Orange's cover of "Today" on his debut EP, Brush Away the Cobwebs.

Umbrella cover artwork explained

She was kind, very shy, and said that she was not used to fans approaching her on the street. Harvest Rock Syndicate article

Another rare photo of the band has turned up in the Harvest Rock Syndicate (also available for viewing in the Gallery) from January 1992.

The article itself is more centered around Karen's personality and songwriting than any of the other band members, but it's an interesting read.

Update: "Weathered"

I received a nicely packaged DVD of Weathered last week and thought I would advance a preview. First off, Weathered is a short film clocking in at just over 18 minutes. I'd rather not spoil the plot, so I'm including a modified summary from the DVD jacket:

"An intimate portrait of a woman trapped in time. Retreating deep within herself, Weather longs for connection and reaches out the only way she knows how...by going to the doctor."

I really did enjoy this film and the use of music was well received. Considering how the band's tracks have been used in past films such as Empire Records, I'm sure the band was quite pleased after reeviewing the footage. The newly re-recorded "Our Harry" runs a little over 30 seconds longer than the original recording found on the album Glow thanks to some additional editing from Matt, but the differences in performance are minimal, excluding the repeated chorus at the end of the song. As stated in my previous post, "Our Harry" is used in its entirety (as is "Brotherhood of Man"). The one standout between the two recorded versions, besides the extension, is the noticeable production clarity of the latter version. Don's attention to detail has resulted in a cleaner recording with less microphone pop as the original.

Lastly, a little more on the crew and cast of Weathered. Matt Barber has served as an editor on such tv shows as Chuck and The O.C.. Lead actress, Nicole Parker, is a regular on MADtv, and supporting actor Tony Hale appears regularly on Chuck as Emmett Milbarge. Actors Cynthia Avila and Tanc Sade (who plays Harry D. Mun) have also acted on various nationally televised TV series.
